Vacuum Insulation Panels
Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) hold great promise for highly effective insulation of a building and its components. Consisting of micro-porous material enclosed in a foil-faced vacuum chamber, VIPs can have an R-value of 30-50 per inch. The main barrier to this technology has been questions about its durability (performance degrades severely when punctured) and its high cost of $3-$5 per square foot. Potential applications include insulation for appliances (e.g. refrigerators and hot water tanks) as well as insulation for the building envelope.
