Structural Insulated Panels

Structural Insulated Panels (SIP’s) are used to help develop an air tight building envelope. These panels are made up of two skins of oriented strand board and an inner core of solid foam insulation bonded together.  Together they make up an incredible strong panel. The panels are 4’X24’ and can be factory cut to meet construction design needs. A standard SIP wall structure has a R-value of R-25 while the roof panels come in two thicknesses, 10-1/4” and 12-1/4”, and have R-value of R-40 and R-48 respectively. Constructing a home using SIP’s can reduce the heating and cooling load of a home up to 50%.

A major characteristic of SIP’s is the strength they provide. In conventional stick framed home a number of braces are used to hold the walls straight. However, SIP’s lock together and are then nailed and glued to create a straight, strong wall system. Foam is then used to ensure air sealing. SIP’s are an extremely cost effective way to reduce heating and cooling loads.  Prefabricated panels also allow for faster construction while minimizing waste on the job.
