Builders Challenge is the Department of Energy’s voluntary home labeling program. Homes that qualify must meet a 70 or better on the EnergySmart Home Scale (E-Scale). The E-Scale allows homebuyers to understand – at a glance – how the energy performance of a particular home compares to that of other homes.
Program Management
Newport is also responsible for the Builders Challenge program management. We arrange and lead all project meetings. Newport also creates and delivers the EnergySmart Home Scale labels for every certified home.
Technical Work
Newport Partners works with builders and verifiers to address technical issues related to qualifying homes for the program. Besides achieving a 70 on the HERS Index, the home must meet a series of Quality Criteria specifications.
The Builders Challenge has developed relationships with other home labeling programs that allow homes meeting another program’s certification level to also qualify as a Builders Challenge home. Newport conducts technical evaluations of the other home rating systems to ensure the programs are compatible.
Marketing Work
Builders Challenge is a national program, and Newport Partners is responsible for coordinating the marketing efforts for this program. This includes developing advertisements and branding strategies, and organizing press events. We also give presentations at conferences and produce webinars for HERS raters and third-party verifiers.
